Cubs, Sox earn NL/AL Player of the Week HonorsBy Brad Stewart on April 5, 2011 at 9:05 am in Cubs, White Sox
Cubs 21-year-old shortstop Starlin Castro’s excelled during his first week in the majors and now he has an award to prove it. Castro was selected as the NL Player of the Week on Monday. On the AL side, White Sox OF Carlos Quentin earned the honor. But despite both players earning the title, Chicago can’t quite claim a sweep. Castro is splitting the award with Cardinals left-hander Jaime Garcia.
Through the first three games of the year, Castro lead the majors with a .615 batting average. He had multiple hits in all three contests and led the NL in slugging.
This is the 2nd player of the week award for Quentin who batted .546 through the first week of the season. That number is good enough for best in the AL in batting average. He was also tied for the lead in doubles and RBIs through the first week.
Despite Castro’s excellence, the Cubs failed to impress during the first week of the season, finishing 2-1 against the Pirates. They added another win on Monday against the D-Backs to pull even to .500. The Sox began the season 2-1 including a disappointing six run loss to the Indians.
